During the recent HK Bridal exhibition in Wanchai, my fiancee, Harrace signed up for this bridal make up trial session, before we were to confirm the bridal make up services. Since it was near towards Chinese New Year, the roads were filled with cars, and of course we were late for the session. Originally, i booked the make up session at 7pm, but it took us nearly 45 minutes being stuck in the taxi, from Mongkok to Hunghom. The cab bill was also a huge HK$100.

Anyway, the bridal make up trial was to test whether i liked the make up and hairstyle designs of this make up artist. The price for testing the make up was HK$300 (for 2 hairstyles and 2 make up), and would be deducted from the bridal make up package if we signed up with them.

This make up artist was recommended by the other video and photography company that we had signed up at the exhibition early February. However, upon meeting the make up artist, i knew that this make up session is headed towards disaster. Here is a snapshot of the bridal make up and hair style.

From this photo shoot, it didn’t look so bad, but trust me, i know how a professional make up artist’s work should be like.

First, was the step of putting on foundation on the skin. She basically just splattered the foundation on my face, and did not even bother to add on any concealer nor highlights to my cheek.

Second, before starting the make up session, the make up artist did not even bother to ask me what look i liked, or what i disliked and instead, just created what she felt was the ideal look.

When she finished doing my eye make up, i asked her to touch up on the eyes as both were not “balanced” in terms of colour being applied. Her response was, oh your eyes are not perfectly equal so …. and i was beginning to wonder where she got her make up training from, as make up if applied properly, could do wonders to less-than-perfect features.

I’ve gone through photography sessions in various photo studios across Asia, such as Kuala Lumpur, Shenzhen and Shanghai, but none of the make up sessions have given me such bad make up results.

By now, i knew that we would not be signing up. The entire make up and hair style was completed in less than 1 hour.

In many Asian bridal shops, or make up sessions, the hair accessories and bridal jewelry are available either as rental or given as complimentary bonuses for bride make up packages.

Not only was i dissatisfied with the make up results (the thought that they were exhibitors in the Hong Kong wedding expo made me rethink how really “professional” wedding suppliers were, beyond their exhibition booths).

Even though HK$300 was for 2 make up styles, and i was already dissatisfied with just the first style, we decided to not proceed. We even cancelled the video photography session with this company as we felt that their service was rather poor. Luckily, we manage to get back a refund on our original deposit minus the payment made for the make up trial full price.
