subscribers set to grow 25% in 5 years

The numbers of local Internet subscribers is set to increase by
25% with in five years, according to Deputy Energy, Communications
and Multimedia Minister Datuk Tan Chai Ho.
"In May this
year, the total number of subscribes stood at 1.3 million and
this number is expected to grow to 1.6 million by the end of this
year," Tan said.
He said there were 18,000 Internet subscribers in the country
in 1995, and that the number had grown to 700,000 last year.
Tan told a press conference this after launching the E-business
ownership campaign 2000 in Subang Jaya, Selangor, yesterday
In view of the development, Tan said, small and medium industries
(SMIs) and small and medium enterprise (SMEs) are encouraged to
capture the opportunities by doing their business through the
e-commerce trading system.
"This will be the fastest way to encouraged the SMIs and SMEs
to go online," he said.
Tan said the traditional way of doing business would gradually
change into high technology and the SMIs had to take the initiative
to move forward.
According to Tan, the extraordinary surge in technological innovations
in the communications and multimedia sector as well as the growing
acceptance of Internet based solutions promises to make our lives
better, make things happen faster and bring the global population
closer together.
Tan said that to stay ahead in the race the SMIs has to adopt
the best business strategies to keep abreast with the constantly
evolving technologies.
" I am sure local SMIs are also seeking better solutions to improve
their positions both in the domestic and global markets, he said.
